A single volume packed with basic information about the coinage of three countries...
By ewomack
In an age of instantaneous information, one wonders about the ultimate fate of the still prevalent hobby price guide. For decades these gradually expanding bound paper guides have helped collectors and investors gauge the wisdom of a purchase and have served as the main founts of knowledge of their respective collector communities. The internet has placed an enormous question mark over the future of these books. Since they appear only once a year, the prices quoted within their covers inevitably date even before the volumes occupy store shelves. The numismatic field in particular struggles for an answer as dealers and buyers increasingly look online for current pricing in a very active market. Auction sites, such as Heritage and Ebay, and various subscription services can reveal an item's most recent purchase price on a weekly or even occasionally on an hourly basis. Books simply can't compete. Nonetheless, books such as Krause Publication's "North American Coins & Prices" continue unabated. Doubtless they endure for many reasons, including the fact that people still purchase them as well as the numerous unanswered questions hovering around the future of online numismatic pricing. Though few serious collectors probably use these books for determining a coin's price or value, these slowly aging fibrous blocks still do serve a purpose. The Krause guide in particular provides an excellent and handy one-volume reference to the coins of North America. And that's worth something.
Of all the numismatic guides currently available, the Krause guide arguably contains the least information. Whether one considers that a negative depends on the type of information one desires in a guide, because the Krause guide undeniably contains voluminous information. Its bulk comprises list after list of coins by country, denomination, mintmark and year. Almost no ancillary information concerning a coin's history, such as found in the "Red Book," exists in parallel to the book's exhaustive and comprehensive lists. The Krause guide stands almost exclusively as a reference book. Therein lies its advantage. Those not needing or wanting the encumbrance of historical or other information can simply look up a coin, find its metal content, dimensions, designer, mintage, rough value estimate and its general context within a type and call it done. Quick. Easy. The lack of additional information allows it to bulk up and include not only United States but also Canadian and Mexican issues. Only until very recently, with the publication of "The Encyclopedia of Mexican Money," the Krause guide remained one of the only reliable references for Mexican coinage in the United States. It makes answering otherwise difficult questions simple, such as "in what years were one peso coins minted between 1900 and 1950?" It also likely introduced many United States collectors to the impressive array of Mexican numismatics, an endlessly fascinating field. Some may even purchase this entire guide exclusively for the section on Mexican coinage. Other sources also exist for Canadian numismatics, such as the annual Unitrade Press series available in English and French, but where they gain in depth they lack in breadth. Again, it all depends on the kind of information one desires.
Krause also keeps its guide affordable by not including color images. All coins, apart from those depicted on the front and back covers, appear in gray scale. Unfortunately, for some of the larger coins, the image of one side overlaps and obscures parts of the opposite side, sometimes up to almost a quarter of the planchet. This happens most frequently in the commemorative sections.
Not only that, the most recent 25th edition displays a 2016 date on the cover, but most of the latest coins inside only date to 2014. For example, the "America the Beautiful" quarters end with the 2014 Everglades issue. The Presidential dollars end with the 2014 Franklin D. Roosevelt dollar and none of the Native American dollars past 2014 show up. The First Spouse issues go back even further and end with Edith Wilson, the final release of the 2013 series. The Canadian section does contain many 2015 releases, but most of the Mexican section seems to terminate at 2014. This all very likely results from the timing constraints of publishing and highlights further disadvantages of print in a digital age.
Still, anyone reading certain sections of the book's introduction will probably find themselves confused. Following an interesting discussion and history of grading United States and Canadian coins and an even more informative section on the grading standards for international coins, the book directs the reader to write or phone the Canadian mint for more information and then states parenthetically to "see chapter 6 for Web information." But no chapter 6 seems to exist. The contents only list two chapters. Of course, it's easy enough to search for "Canadian Mint" on the internet, but some parts of these otherwise very useful introductory chapters seem to have fallen into neglect. Though mostly harmless errors, such peccadilloes may nonetheless help deflect newcomers to the hobby away from the print volumes that their predecessors held in high esteem. Even without these and the other already mentioned issues with print, young numismatists, perpetually armed with interconnected mobile devices, may find little reason to refer to any paper guides with a powerful tool such as the internet at their disposal. Of course, they may have little choice in the present as the hobby painfully shifts from one where authority rests on paper to one where it rests in cyberspace. The outcome of this tension still remains ineffable and evasive. In any case, the hobby itself will likely survive.
The Krause guide, despite some of its shortcomings, still provides a solid reference for the coinage of The United States, Canada and Mexico. Anyone looking for a quick reference to the unimaginable varieties and types of these three countries' vast coinage will find it here. For the foreseeable future, such paper guides will likely persist, but the hobby has reached an impasse that still awaits resolution by numerous individuals and organizations.

Big Help
By An Indy Fan
I inherited a large collection of coins this summer from an uncle who travelled extensively for work. The collection not only included a great many U.S. coins but also a good number from Canada and Mexico. This book was perfect for identifying what I had and for providing values. Very easy to use. I also had questions about some coins from Mexico and called the publisher who provided additional help. Very much appreciated. Handy book.
