Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Social Class: Dimensions of Inequality and IdentityFrom SAGE Publications, Inc

An eye-opening exploration of how socials statuses intersect to shape our identities and produce inequalities.

In this fully edited and streamlined Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Social Class: Dimensions of Inequality and Identity, Second Edition, Susan Ferguson has carefully selected readings that open readers’ eyes to the ways that social statuses shape our experiences and impact our life chances. The anthology represents many of the leading voices in the field and reflects the many approaches used by scholars and researchers to understand this important and evolving subject. The anthology is organized around broad topics (Identity, Power and Privilege, Social Institutions, etc.), rather than categories of difference (Race, Gender, Class, Sexuality) to underscore this fundamental insight: race, class, gender, and sexuality do not exist in isolation; they often intersect with one another to produce social inequalities and form the bases of our identities in society.

Nine readings are new to this edition:

  • Michael Polgar—on Jewish assimilation and culture in the U.S.
  • Katherine Franke—on the 1940 Supreme Court case, Suneri v. Cassagne, concerning racial identity
  • Carla Pfeffer—on transgender identity
  • Michelle Alexander—on the New Jim Crow
  • Richard Lachmann—on the decline of the U.S. as an economic and political power
  • Abby Ferber—on privilege and “oppression blindness”
  • Amada Hess—Why Women Aren’t Welcome on the Internet
  • Iris Marion Young—Five Faces of Oppression
  • Ellis Cose—Rage of the Privileged

“The choice of readings in Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Social Class: Dimensions of Inequality and Identity is better than my current text in terms of inequality and steps of closing the gaps.”
 – Dr. Deden Rukmana, Savannah State University

“I really like how Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Social Class: Dimensions of Inequality and Identity deals with underlying concepts rather than difference by x, y, or z.”
– Ana Villalobos, Brandeis University

Review
“The choice of readings in Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Social Class: Dimensions of Inequality and Identity is better than my current text in terms of inequality and steps of closing the gaps.”  (Dr. Deden Rukmana)

“I really like how Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Social Class: Dimensions of Inequality and Identity deals with underlying concepts rather than difference by x, y, or z.”   (Ana Villalobos)

“I appreciate the historical, theories of difference, and identity issues as fundamental for understanding diversity….There appears to be a logical and progressive flow from one section to the other, ending with a constructive note with tools for social change.”  (Carmen I. Aponte, Ph.D.)

About the Author

Susan Ferguson is Professor of Sociology at Grinnell College, where she has taught for almost 20 years. Ferguson regularly teaches Introduction to Sociology, and her critically acclaimed anthology, Mapping the Social Landscape: Readings in Sociology (McGraw-Hill, 2010) is used in introductory classes around the country. Ferguson also teaches courses on the family, medical sociology, the Sociology of the Body, and a new seminar on social inequality and identity. Ferguson has published in all of these areas, including the research collection, Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic (with co-editor Anne Kasper, Palgrave, 2000), and Shifting the Center: Understanding Contemporary Families (McGraw-Hill, 2011). In addition, Ferguson is the General Editor for “Contemporary Family Perspectives,” which is a series of research monographs and short texts on the family (Sage Publications).

Ferguson, who grew up in a working class family in Colorado, still considers the Rocky Mountains to be her spiritual home. A first-generation college student, Ferguson was able to attend college with the help of scholarships, work study, and financial loans. She majored in Political Science and Spanish and also completed certificates of study in Women’s Studies and Latin American Studies. After working a couple of years for a large research grant sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, Ferguson entered graduate school and completed her master’s degree in sociology at Colorado State University and her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her areas of study are gender, family, women’s health, and pedagogy, but her primary enthusiasm is for teaching.

Awesome - If You Can Find It!
By Wendy Ritch
I teach an undergrad intro course in Women's and Gender Studies. I can't tell you how many potential texts I reviewed before FINALLY finding this one, which is the absolute best of the best. The theoretical underpinnings of the book are social constructionism and intersectionality -- and the chapters don't just pay lip service to these theoretical frameworks, they explain them and apply them in ways that make sense to college students. Every week I use selections from three books with each week organized thematically: this text, The Essential Feminist Reader (Modern Library Classics) and The Feminist Utopia Project: Fifty-Seven Visions of a Wildly Better Future. These books work very well in concert and the students can really sink their teeth into the content. My only complaint with Ferguson's text is it's lack of availability -- it's on backorder everywhere, including on Amazon, and there is no e-book version. Get this book. Use it. You will not be disappointed and neither will your students.
