About the Author
Rajnesh Tyagi is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) IIT (BHU) India. He obtained his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1992, and his Ph.D. in 2001 from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. Dr. Tyagi also worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Nanjing PR China from Dec 2008 to Sept 2010. His research interests include Materials Development and Tribology, Composite materials and High Temperature wear and Solid Lubrication, Surface Engineering etc. Recently, he is diversifying in Wear Protective coatings and texturing, Nano-tribology etc. He is a life member of Tribology Society of India and reviewer to various international journals like Wear, Tribology International and Tribology Letters, to name a few.

J. Paulo Davim received his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Porto in 1997 and the Aggregation from the University of Coimbra in 2005. Currently, he is an Aggregate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Aveiro. He has more 25 years of teaching and research experience in manufacturing, materials and mechanical engineering with special emphasis in machining and tribology. Recently, he has also interest in sustainable manufacturing and industrial engineering. He is the Editor-in-Chief of six international journals, guest editor of journals, books editor, book series editor and scientific advisory for many international journals and conferences. Presently, he is an editorial board member of 20 international journals and acts as reviewer for than 70 prestigious ISI Web of Science journals. In addition, he has also published in his field of research as author and co-author more than 40 book chapters and 350 articles in journals and conferences (more 180 articles in ISI Web of Science, h-index 25+).

The life and work of Michael Whelan (until 1992)

Compared to his two previous books (Works of Wonder and Wonderworks) this one is far more detailed concerning the artist's life, working methods and work analysis.

As for the art, it's mostly a selection of the paintings that had already been published on the two books mentioned above with some new additions.

Breathtaking art, beautiful format

This book is truly a work of art!
The eminently talented Michael Whelan showcases his treasures in this large-size, full-color coffee table book.
With his superb attention to detail and boundless imagination, MW has created fantastic worlds. Here, he catalogues his numerous book covers (all genres of Science Fiction, and all genres of Fantasy, and other areas), paintings, and assorted works (he paints not just for a living but for his own enjoyment, evident in the many small sketches included throughout the book).
MW himself describes each piece. He isn't an artist who simply creates a cover when commissioned; he reads the text of the book he will be making a cover for. This is what makes his book cover art so wonderful. In my mind, his cover art for "Catspaw" and "The Snow Queen" are every bit as memorable as the stories they were made for. He details everything minutely: the curling edges of a drying leaf, the dust stain in a fold of clothing, a nick on the blade of a warrior's battle-ax, a snarl in a lock of hair, the markings on a spaceship lifting off from a background launch pad, the clearing sky reflected in a dangling pane of broken glass, the frayed edges of a worn rope attached to a forgotten bell. And that's just the little stuff in the background.
What sets this book aside from other art books is the fact that this book is made for people who like to LOOK at the art. Nearly half of the pieces featured here are full-page size, with the text/description and sketches, studies, details, alternative concepts on the facing page. Too many art books tend to squeeze pictures into small squares on a page. None of that here. The colors are sharp and vivid. The edges are sharp and crisp. The paper used is heavy glossy paper. There are three chapters (interviews, introduction, technical aspects) printed on heavy parchment-like paper. The book itself is clothbound in matte midnight black, embossed in gold. The publishers spared no expense in making this book.
And here's something I haven't seen in other art books: the 85+ full page plates are indexed in a back section of the book. Shrunk down to B&W postage-stamp size, you can glance through to quickly find your favorite picture.
The work represented here covers everything from dragons, winged lions, medieval castles, futuristic alien castles, strange aliens, bustling spaceports, nature settings, warriors of every type, humans and much more. Each picture is worth a thousand words indeed.
The paper cover/dustjacket features "Passage: The Avatar" (the breathtaking blue ruins) on the front and "The Summer Queen" on the back, both are featured inside the book. This is a plus, as many times the dustjacket art is counted among the represented work.
Very highly recommended.

About the Author

Mary Wrobel is a speech-language pathologist with more than twenty years of experience working with students who have autism and other disabilities. She wrote Taking Care of Myself to help teach students with disabilities the necessary information and skills they need to live safe, healthy lives as independently as they are physically and mentally capable of. Mary believes that by teaching these special young people self-care skills, we can instill personal safety and reduce confusion, fear, and the incidence of abuse.

Suitable for boys and girls on the autism spectrum

My son turned ten a few months ago so I decided Personal Hygiene and Puberty were topics we needed to delve into. I am very glad I purchased this book since it covered Deodorant, shaving, growth spurts and using a urinal.

My 10 year old is high functioning and his almost nine year old sibling is non-verbal and could benefit from some of the chapters as he gets older.

Throughout the book the stories are told in various points of views, either in the first, second or third person. Visual cues, communication aides and assistive technology is shown within the chapters. Mary also suggests starting self-care skills as young as three for brushing teeth and washing hands.

One thing to note is that the fonts change throughout the book. The pages that discuss developing a program and teaching various skills are presented in an easy to read manner, mostly for the adults teaching the curriculum. The remaining pages are activities and social stories that have larger fonts that are bolded. This seems to be easier to follow for my son as well.

All the diagrams inside are in black and white, plus the cover is not overstated and should not be embarassing to a pre-teen or teen.

Your student or child will not read about birth control, sexual intercourse, reproduction or sexually transmitted diseases. It is recommended to supplement this curriculum as the students become young adults. I was glad to know these issues would not be covered, yet my son ran into two words when looking up puberty in the dictionary - reproductive and sexually.

He was disappointed not to find a glossary, but liked learning about growing a mustache and how old he would be when he finally gets to high school.

None of the steps listed in the book are numbered, which I think is a good thing so the students do not get stuck on certain numbers instead of the actual steps.

The information presented is repetitious in nature, but that is needed when teaching children on the autism spectrum. There is plenty of room for note taking and creating your own social stories. This book is a useful tool for families, teachers and therapists to instill these vital lessons to children with autism.

Clean Up Time

This book makes me think of the John Lennon 1980 classic, "Clean Up Time."

This is an excellent book geared for the adolescent or tween on the autism/Asperger's spectrum. I like the way it tackles topics such as body development; hormonal changes; basic grooming and bathroom etiquette such as when boys use urinals.

I like the way vignettes were provided using different voices, e.g. first, second, third person. Prompts such as visual cues and other teaching tools are included. This author wisely suggests using a similar approach in teaching preschoolers good grooming habits and the rationale for same.

This book is for the adult instructor and young pupil alike. The drawings are discreet and appropriate and are not likely to make a young person feel embarrassed or threatened.

The tone of this book is plainly quite instructional, which is often a good approach with the a/A population. People with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) have been called "little professors" and often seek informational books and present discussions in an informtional format. This book does a good job of recognizing this trait and responding to it accordingly.

I highly recommend this book for parents, educators and young people. It is an important work and valuable resource tool.

I'm so glad I found this book!

I have a 10 yr. old daughter who is autistic. I have been worrying over the issues that are discussed in this book. It has proven to be such a huge resource. I tagged most of the book and I was able to borrow a boardmaker to start printing out all the ideas I got from this book. I now have a great shower sequence laminated and hanging in the bathroom for my daughter that she can use after I fade myself out from teaching her how to shower herself. Now I am starting to work on some of the more difficult stuff and there are plenty of social stories to copy and tweak to make it better suited to your child's needs. This book is chock full of great ideas and conversation starters for you and your growing daughter or son. It covers the stuff that you really would rather not think about but have no choice to, and it lays out things that you could say in simple terms to make it so that you wont have to fumble trying to find the right words and make it too difficult for your daughter or son to understand. I will be using this book pretty much from cover to cover! It also has a bit of advice telling you how you should delegate some of the tasks to the team at school. I have already discussed this with my daughters team and lucky for us they are all on board especially knowing that I am starting the teaching from home and they just need to follow up and not the other way around for once.

A very deep and intriguing novel!

I had the pleasure of reading this novel for a college class, and I must admit that it was psychologically stimulating in one sense, and poignant in another sense. The fact that the story is actually based on true events makes the novel all the more appealing.

About the Author
Cherie Bevan (the Cook) is a chef and caterer who grew up inspired by a mother and grandmother who were fabulous home bakers. She established deli cafe Gusto at Bondi Beach and Paddington in the early 90s and then established Crave at Bondi Junction and Bellevue Hill, before collaborating with Tass to create The Cook and Baker, in 2012. Tass Tauroa (the Baker) developed a passion for baking early and spent his formative cooking years in the New Zealand Royal Navy. Arriving in Sydney in 1995, worked for Cherie at Gusto before travelling and working extensively throughout Europe and in London under Michelin star chef Bruno Loubet. In Sydney he has worked at Jersey Cow, Darling Mills, Buzo and Bird Cow Fish and also again with Cherie at Crave

This book is stunning - when I saw the cover I had to order it. Baked Lemon and Rhubarb Tarts, Banana and White Chocolate Blondies, Passionfruit Custard Squares, Oaty Ginger Crunch....Sweet and savory recipes and absolutely beautiful photographs. A must have for bakers.Unique and unusual recipes and some old familiar ones.

Connie L. Dotson is a journeyman tool and die maker and a professional trainer who has taught technical, apprentice, software, and metrology courses in college and private industry. She also has presented training design plans at the national American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) Conference. She holds a Master of Business Administration degree with emphasis on adult learning and training design.

could be better

Very dry reading. Of all my CNC class books, this one is definitely the most boring to read. The graphics could be better, as well. An example, there is a diagram of a engine lathe. There were tons of names and arrows to the parts, however, the diagram was so small, you needed a magnifying glass to see what they were pointing at. Either explode some parts, then label them, or have the diagram take up the entire page.

Please don't build a class around this book!

As some others have said, this book would be great for hobbyists. There's a wealth of information in it that is invaluable to machinists,
metrologists, engineers and the like.
That said, I'm not a hobbyist - I'm a student. As of this writing
(Spring 2013), Morrisville State College uses this book for their
Dimensional Metrology course. As a teaching aid, this book is awful. The
questions are vague - poorly worded, and with little indication if
several answers are desired (as is often the case). The chapters are
poorly organized. If you need to go back into a chapter to look for
specific information, good luck finding it.

This book tries to pander to English and Metric units, and it does so
poorly. Sometimes, it will address English first and then (the next
paragraph, perhaps) Metric. Other times, it will do the opposite. There
are still other times when it tries to tackle both at once, and it
renders passages of the book unreadable.

The writing style of the book is the horrible love-child of "incredibly
dry" and "get to the point!". There's lots of superfluous wording and
anecdotes, and all of it is a chore to plod through.

Originally written in the 1960's, the Band Aid's applied over the years
certainly show. Many of the images ("Figures", in book-speak) have
captions only tangentially related to them. The image may have things
labeled A, B, C, etc. on it, but the labels are never addressed
anywhere else in the text.

If you're someone that *wants* to learn about dimensional metrology, I'm
sure you could overlook this book's flaws. For people that *need* to
learn it, these flaws are inexcusable, especially at this price point.

Metrology--book that makes it easy to learn about it

This book was a syllabus requirement for one of my quality assurance classes. It was a simple book to learn from, as there were several drawings and illustrations explaining several dimensional metrology factors. The chapters are pretty much spelled out with each section focusing on a different metrology subject matter. A book on this subject matter can be intimidating to read especially for those who are just starting out with learning about the subject. The author does a great job explaining everything through wording and illustrating which shows the author really does know metrology very well. I was very pleased with this book and I still use it as a reference to this day.
