Not actionable

I found that this book was not particularly actionable, and recycled a lot of content which Altucher has previously published online and in other books of his. Altucher tries to redefine wealth in non-monetary terms, and then speaks abstractly about how to maximize his redefined version of wealth. While it's a snappy title, I don't feel like I learned anything useful from reading it. One major flaw is that Altucher frequently uses himself as a case study, when many of his accomplishments are path-dependent on his prior accomplishments.

Pretty good really

Pretty good really, Some interesting and thought provoking stuff if your new to James work. Re iteration if you are familiar with it, but very good to have in one small package rather than in a whole series of blog posts.
Show's you answers and asks you questions but at the end of the day your still going to have to work very hard to achieve whatever it is your looking for.
Like anything in life there's no quick fix and if it's something worthwhile going for, the sweat, tears and grit will get you there, a little easier if you enjoy it as the time passes in a more enriched way and a hell of a lot harder if you don't, both still hard. This book helps make some of these choices a little easier and gives you tips to head in the right direction and make your journey as smooth as possible.

Good, but a little "off"

Some good ideas, however the book is in serious need of proofreading. Admittedly, I am probably more irked by typographical and grammatical errors than most, but those got in the way of my enjoyment of the book. Also, I felt that some of the wording and language used was awkward and at first, difficult to understand. The book also seemed a bit disorganized and "thrown together."

That said, James had some valid and interesting points and ideas. While I didn't agree with all ideas, they are certainly good "food for thought."

Ages 5^-7. Egan is one of the most interesting author-illustrators around, always trying something new and quirky. This time, the story is about a dog couple, Arthur and Stella Crandall. Arthur keeps burning the toast, so when an annoying fly tells Arthur he will grant him three wishes if he puts down the fly swatter, Arthur wishes for a new toaster, for the nasty crocodiles on the corner to turn into squirrels, and for a trip to a tropical island where the natives sing and dance all day. Well, the fly doesn't get it quite right. The toaster turns into a squirrel, and the crocs turn into toasters, but the natives sing and dance ad nauseam on the tropical island. Happily, magic brings the couple back home again, where they are able to enjoy their new toaster (formerly a crocodile). There's nothing predictable here, either in the meticulously rendered watercolor art with its deco edge or in the hilarious story. Some of this has an adult feel, but it hits its target audience, too. Ilene Cooper

Stella and Arthur, a couple of dogs, live on Davenport Street. Theirs is a humble existence: They eat--Arthur burns the toast every morning--go for walks, sleep. ``It was a nice life. Not perfect, but nice.'' The flaw is that a gang of unruly crocodiles taunt them on their morning walk, e.g., ``Hey, lady, what did your husband give you for your birthday, a flea collar?'' A fly in the kitchen, begging Arthur not to swat it, is the bearer of three wishes. Arthur, incredulous, humors the insect and the wishes come true, sort of. Egan (Metropolitan Cow, 1996, etc.) casts ordinary Joes into dreamlike, absurdist situations--with a hint of menace--that are quelled by a good dose of common sense and plain speaking. Tasty Toast!

"Burnt Toast on Davenport Street" has become a mantra in our house! This wacky book which we originally took out of the public library (and didn't want to return) has become an all time family favorite for it's droll sense of humor, vivid illustrations, and rather bizarre plot. My seven year old insists on a reading every night before bed. We do have a toaster that frequently misbehaves especially for "Dad" so that might be part of the charm but...You have to read this if you are between the ages of 5 and 11! Not since "Yucka, Drucka, Droni" has a book so captured our imagination.

WHAT A WONDFUL, QUIRKY BOOK. LOVE THIS ONE!

This is probably one of the most original works I have had the pleasure of reading in some time now. It is just down right quirky! For some reason I was instantly able to identify with Arthur Crandell and his world. I have read this particular work to several of my third grade classes and it keeps them absolutely enthralled during the whole reading. The author is certainly blessed with a strange and wonderful imagination and it comes out in this droll text and even more droll illustrations, which, by the way, are absolutely a delight. The colors and situations are very, very detailed and yet simple. If you care to find out just how detailed they are, have a pack of third graders go over each picture with you pointing this and that out! The story moral is quite simple...be careful for what you wish for, you might just get it, is classic. This is certainly one you need to find and add to your library. I highly recommend this one.

Burnt Toast on Davenport Street is delicious!

Now I love burnt toast & its smell brings back all sorts of memories! Tim Egan has created a funny & telling little story of a couple of dogs in their happy &, well, almost dull lives. The only fly in the ointment is the gang of crocodiles who jeer & taunt them as they take their stroll around their neighborhood.
With delightful pictures & a tongue-in-cheek humor, Tim Egan, once again, gives us a charming, instructional parable on the old saying: be careful what you wish for!....END

i cant understand who in their right mind would pay 3.00 for a chapter of a book! i love this series, but i can not pay that much for 37 pages without feeling like an idiot. there are a lot of good books - that are complete story lines- that i can purchase for the same price or a little more. so sad that kelly has decided to gauge her customers

I've been using my kindle unlimited membership to borrow the books for free. Now that the last one was only offered to purchase, I can't believe I let myself pay $2.99 for 37 pages. It's poorly edited and a total rip-off for 37 pages.

I am hearing the amazon changed the way it pays the authors for their work. Well regardless, I can't let myself pay $3 for a one chapter book when there are probably 15 more chapter or so to go. I just stopped myself from reading anymore of this series. I will just have to wonder what happened. I was hooked but i just kicked the habit. I am considering cancelling my unlimited acct if this continues with other authors.

Wonder for any piano music lover

There are several reasons I love this book. For one, the songs are very familiar and are pleasing to play. These are instumental works so you get to play it the way it is performed, instead or incorporating the melody into the right-hand piano parts. The chord progressions are very interesting (flat 9th chords, flat 5th, etc.) especially the way they are voiced. You can see an example at the sheet music plus web site. There is another version of this book with parts that are easier to play. I have only seen one sample page from that book (Linus and Lucy) and in the other book it is played in C major and doesn't have the left-hand rhythmic anticipations (first note begins an eight note early) while this book has the song in E-flat, which is a little harder to play but sounds richer. I have a QRS player piano roll of Linus and Lucy and I noticed that it matches the Christas CD better. The song on the CD goes through the main part of the song three times with two swinging (hard to play) refrains. The two refrains are a little different, with the second one being more dissonant than the first. The book documents only the second. The bass line for the refrains are simple walking quarter notes while the piano roll has a rag-time style alternating eight note bass notes and chords. This is fine by me because this is plenty hard to play as it is (triplets over quarter notes, etc.).

At any rate, check out the sample at Sheet Music Plus to see if the difficulty matches you ability. If so, this is a great purchase.

A faithful transcription

I got this book as a present one year and was absolutely amazed. I've always loved the Charlie Brown Christmas Special and came to appreciate the music more and more as I grew up. Reading through the book, I discovered that the authors had done a painstaking job of transcribing Vince Garauldi's performance nearly note-for-note. When you first start playing "The Christmas Song" for example, you hear those flat-9 chords Vince loved to play and think to yourself, "Yeah, that's the real deal." Even the improvised solos are transcribed wonderfully.

This is NOT a book for the faint of heart. If you are unfamiliar with playing jazz piano, you may quickly get overwhelmed. However, what better way to learn some advanced chord voicings than to play it exactly the way the arranger did? The songs are beautiful and incredibly fun to play, but without at least an intermediate piano skill level, you may get frustrated.

If you are looking for a Piano Solo book with arrangments by Vince Guaraldi for Charlie Brown Christmas music, This Is It! All of the songs from the CD "A Charlie Brown Christmas" appear in this book. Do Not be fooled by the word "arrangment", if you happen to be looking for the original music. All of this music sounds almost exactly like the CD (and movie for that matter) even to the point of being written in the same key (F Major, G Major, Ab Major sometimes). Excellent Buy!
