About the Author
Nicknamed "Slim Darley", the late H.C.H. Darley was formerly a member of the Institute of Petroleum in London, an active member within SPE, and a Researcher for Shell for almost 25 years as well as a Consultant. Darley earned a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from Birmingham University in the UK, and Mr. Darley passed away in 1996.

The late George Gray, or "Doc Gray", as he was known in the industry, was a drilling fluids technologist for NL Baroid for over 30 years and a pioneer in the development of drilling fluids technology. He willingly served on innumerable committees and held various offices in technical societies, including Director and Vice President of SPE and various poistions within the American Chemical Society and American Petroleum Institute. George earned a BS degree from Texas Christian University and a MS and PHD degree from Rice University and was a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas. George passed away in 1983.

Though this book is little dated, the theory and principles are still applicable to today. Some of the techniques and practices have been updated to meet today's enviromental standards. This book is the "bible" for mud engineer's and chemist designing drilling fluids for the oil industry.

enough is enough

I was pleased to hear that this text had been assigned in a graduate research course at my graduate school of social work. I'm seriously disappointed. I would not recommend this text's continued use. It is excessively repetitive, constantly restating previous material (commonly referred to as 'rehashing'), and, as a sidebar, i can't help but mention an irritating habit of unnecessary references to material yet to come ('we'll talk about that more in chapter 14.'). The writing style is terribly wordy, and in a weighted, clunky pseudo-conversational style that rarely is effective in a textbook. The actual technical information is obscured in a constant river of verbiage, usually in page after page of solid block text, the least helpful format when learning technical information (or when subsequently searching for specific information or techniques). The result? It serves as a strong sedative. Finally, the authors repeatedly express apologies, in what eventually (by page 350) feels like an obsequious and cloying manner, for putting forward an empirical and accountable approach to clinical practice. The worst, though, is the repetition of material, as if the reader were an idiot. The sheer relentlessness of it is what is so galling, and at $100 bucks, neither affordable nor worth the investment. There are other texts out there with clearer, cleaner, more articulate prose, that are more respectful of the reader, and at half the price, such as the classic and affordable: Single-Case Research Designs: Methods for Clinical and Applied Settings by Alan E. Kazdin. Ignore the pollyanna reviews above and below, and avoid this text, or if on the syllabus, protest and suggest an alternative.

Terrible Textbook

This book is awful. As a serious student who makes excellent grades and takes learning quite seriously, this book is insulting. As the previous reviewer stated, it repetitive to the point that every chapter says the same thing. It's far too long and far too expensive. I am in a dual Social Work and Public Health program, and this is my fourth methods course that I have taken. I understand the value of a good textbook, and this is most certainly NOT a good text book. If you are a student required to have this book, buy the older edition and save yourself some money - the citations are not super current even in this sixth edition, you won't be missing much at all.

A Classic in Practice Evaluation

Bloom, Fischer and Orme continue to make an unique contribution to improving practice in the human services by providing a road map by which practitioners can evaluate their effectiveness. I've been using their text book for over 15 years in teaching practice evaluation and in has been an invaluable help. The new edition has a CD Rom with SingWin, CAAP,and CAAS which I was able to install in Windows XP Home edition. You must install CAAS before CAAP for it to work. The sofware computerizes record keeping, score computation, and graph construction. I strongly reccommend this textbook for human services faculty.

Oh holiday romances, the bane of an over-active imagination, too much sun, alcohol and lack of judgement. I can understand how Marianne mistakenly thinks her holiday hot stuff will work in her home setting, because she is simply deluded and blinded by the romantic memories she clings to.
Hot stuff turns out to be all fluffy flab with the attitude of a squatter. Unfortunately he comes to stay and much like a bad smell, he lingers in the background throughout the entire dramatic story.
This story is about leaving the mistakes of the past behind and forgiveness. It is also about believing in yourself and having the courage to take a step towards new ventures.
Marianne lives within the huge shadow of her beautiful sister Hayley, despite a lack of musical talent their mother thinks Hayley is the next star upon the horizon. Marianne has gotten used to being the plan one, the boring one, the one who is expected to play it safe.
All that changes when her father turns up out of the blue, after many years of being absent. Having to deal with his terminal illness and the lies her mother constructed around his disappearance, is the last drop of water in an already overfilled barrel. Things start to unravel and certain family relationships are in danger of being destroyed forever.

the best book i've ever read

this book was a great and educational book for all teenagers.
this taught me about puberty and what I'll be going through when i hit puberty. This is also a very funny book and is the best book i have ever read. It teaches you a lot of things about drugs, sex life, hangovers and more. I personaly recommend this book for your child or if whoever is reading this is a child I would recommend it to them. I also would think parents would love it because they would think it was funny and think that it has given very good information for there child reading it. THIS BOOK RULES!!

This book showed up in my school library when I was 12, over ten years ago now. Laugh-out-loud funny and taught me so much that others were unwilling or unable to. The highest recommendation I can give this book is that I will be getting a copy for my little brother when his time to grow up comes.

Important Skill Whether Using Pencil, Ink or Mouse

In this age of notation software, MIDI event views and direct wave editing, it's reasonable to ask: Is writing music manuscript by hand an archaic, dying art? I like to think not, though I have no illusions about the generation raised with electronic memo pads in their back pockets where I once carried a small spiral one.

Call me old-fashioned but the image of someone whipping out a piece of manuscript at a rehearsal or in between sets and suddenly scribbling down an idea for a harmony part or an extended jam interlude is just too familiar. When I'm writing something, with or without an instrument in hand, I find the less I have to "operate" as in clicking mouse buttons or touch pens the less distracted I am. Call it left brain intruding on right brain or whatever, we all have to find our own working

path.

Mark McGrain's "Music Notation" was written before such electronic possibilities became widespread, when communicating written musical ideas accurately and efficiently demanded correct and legible notation skills. I'd argue it's still a valuable skill to have and this book lays out the principles

in a thorough, progressive way, requiring little more than manuscript paper, pencil and straightedge.

Unlike that other notation classic "The Art of Music Copying" by Clinton Roemer, McGrain's book is geared not towards teaching you to be a professional "ink" music copyist for which, frankly, job opportunities are likely non-existent. Rather McGrain views notation skills as a valuable part of musicianship, whether in the context of studying, performing, arranging or composing.

Being a Berklee book, it's geared towards jazz instrumentation. I'd recommend Gardner Read if you're searching for a classical text, particularly 20th century techniques.

McGrain begins with rhythmic subdivisions and pitch notation within what he calls the notational grid. He combines micro-detail (how to draw note ovals and stems) with the larger

context of spacing and beaming notes in bars to achieve a uniform appearance across the score page. Articulation

and phrasing markings, tempo, divisi parts, everything you might encounter on a jazz orchestral (and frankly, quite a lot of classical scores) is not just covered, but explained.

And that's a key part of the justification here: notation software often provides you with a "how to" but often

neglects the "why to", many times forcing you into a particular formating that's counter intuitive to the way you conceptualize the music. Yes, you can often jump through hoops to get the

notes precisely the way you want them, but without the knowledge of why particular conventions are used, it's easy to blindly (blandly?) accept an often compromised solution.

Years ago there was an exhibit called "Settling New Scores" in New York at the Frick Library.

It included a gallery of music manuscripts from a variety of 20th century composers. The sheer beauty, variety, and personality that came through those pages was as impressive as any "visual art" show I'd been to. Sure, music will always be first and foremost about the ear; but as they say on the Food Network, "Presentation counts".

clear, concise, detailed

I was first introduced to this well laid out text as a student at Berklee. I found the step by step guidelines to be very helpful. Mark guides the reader through the process of drawing each notation symbol with a no-nonsense easy to follow approach. Each chapter concludes with a comprehensive exercise sheet. I continue to use the book as a reference text everyday.

Excellent resource for rookie preppers!

While this material may be just "common sense" for many people, I found it to be extremely helpful. As a widow who relied upon her husband for 35 years to take care of many of the day to day preparedness tasks, from finances to household repairs, yard work, and security, I have found it frightening to feel so vulnerable without him. I have watched Mr. Kobler's Southern Prepper 1 You Tube Channel and have learned a great deal. do it was only natural to purchase a book he collaborated upon. To have this information summarized and systematically presented is a great comfort to me and quite empowering to realize that I can, in fact learn to take care of myself, as well as perhaps learn new skills to help take care of others. As a retired pastor, I deeply appreciate that the authors begin their book with how to develop a strong spiritual foundation to enhance one's physical survivablility. The plan they lay out in the whole book should be easy for most people to follow if they are willing to develop the self discipline approach to prepping set forth in the book. I highly recommend the book for neophyte preppers. Well done.

It Doesn't Get More Practical & Applicable Than This!!!

Really a practical resource... As others have mentioned it goes beyond the "beans, bullets & band aids" and adds some very important items that many books fail to address... Body, Soul and Budget are often overlooked and I think they are really vital... I know it has motivated me to rededicate myself to increasing my level of fitness... Some have complained that the book is too short or too shallow... I can sort of understand that BUT I also think that it is good because of that... It is not a 600 page manual that a reader will get intimidated by and never apply because they are overwhelmed... I also appreciated how practical and applicable it was... Didn't get all bogged down in this brand vs. that brand... I also appreciated the fact that is revealed to me a couple of areas where I was out of balance... I don't think I am alone in thinking that because I have some training, I have done research, and because I am "at it" diligently that I automatically do things in the right ratio... I see in my life how some things I have neglected- and others where I can probably ease off a little until I restore the balance... Love the Youtube channel Southernprepper1and have been a HUGE fan of all of Mark's other books as well... Great job!!! This is a "must have" for the novice and veteran alike...
