My kids have been participating in the Purple Comet Math Meet for the past 4 years. As homeschoolers, finding opportunities where they can work together on a team to solve interesting problems was never an option until the Purple Comet came along. The problems themselves are great preparation for AMC contests and cover a wide variety of topics, however, this book starts training the kids to problem solve at the middle school level and guides them all the way to high school level problem solving. Topics like Number Theory and Combinatorics become accessible to a younger generation while exciting their interest in math. We love having so many of these problems together in one book, especially since we missed the earlier competitions. The authors' experience in problem writing is evident by the elegance of the concepts they introduce. We love this book! --David Cordeiro

Dr. Titu Andreescu is an associate professor of mathematics in the Science and Mathematics Education department at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). Just the book you need to train for math competitions!

More great problems for Middle School and High School students.

Titu Andreescu is a catalyst for excitement in math for the young and talented. This collection of problems from an online contest is another of his additions to the fun awaiting those who are willing to take a chance. It is nice to have the problems all in book format. The problem sets cover a wide range of type and difficulty.

Innovative math ed design and implementation

What is a math meet? The traditional big events for problem-solving Math Circles are math competitions. There are many competitions, but Purple Comet! math meet stands out because of its clever, modern design. As other quality competitions, Purple Comet! offers children original, meaningful, interesting, tricky problems that are a joy to solve – that is, real mathematics. But there is more:

1. Global network, local communities. Purple Comet! is an international festival and an online event – but it consists of local experiences with friends. The global network generates energy, problem-posing support, and the sense of scale that a local circle would not achieve alone. But local communities provide the depth of discussion, camaraderie and nurturing that a global network lacks. Together, the two aspects work their magic.

2. Teamwork. The vast majority of math and science is done collaboratively, but children often take tests and competitions alone. Purple Comet! invites teams to solve problems together, only competing against other teams. This allows for more interesting types of problems. For example, some problems require insight, which is more likely to happen in group brainstorming. Other problems split into multiple sub-problems, so each person can tackle a piece of the bigger puzzle.

3. Technology is welcome. While doing things by hand can be artistic, quaint, or cute, most children who love science and math, and of course all STEM professionals, use computational tools in their problem-solving. Purple Comet! problems are designed with computing devices in mind. The problems focus on ingenuity and reasoning, rather than memory or computation. However, many problems are based on number patterns, so students learn to appreciate how numeracy and computational fluency help in problem-solving.

4. Self-checking. The design principle of self-checking goes back to Montessori. All problems have nonnegative integer answers. At the beginning, this principle made it easier to program Purple Comet! software. By now, it became an appreciated tradition. If a team gets a different sort of answer, they know to rework the problem. The known format of an answer is a hint, but not a big reveal, like knowing the correct answer would be.

Greatest series of books ever!!!

Apart from the God-authored Holy Bible, the MacArthur New Testament Commentary is the greatest series of books in the history of the written word!

Dr. John MacArthur has been pastor of Grace Community Church in Los Angeles since 1969. During that time, he has preached verse-by-verse through the entire New Testament. The commentary chapter divisions are (essentially) derived from those individual sermons.

The essence of John MacArthur's credibility is his unswerving devotion to the Divine inspiration (authorship), absolute inerrancy, and complete authority of the Bible. Since the Bible is the true and infallible written revelation of God to mankind, Dr. MacArthur has said: "The only logical response to inerrant Scripture is to preach it expositionally. By that, I mean preaching in such a way that the meaning of the Bible passage is presented entirely and exactly as it was intended by God." This commitment results in content that is consistently and faithfully evangelical, because, as he explains: "Over the years of teaching the word of God without a lot of presuppositions, I tend to conclude whatever I believe the exegetical process yields."

But, although MacArthur has successfully disentangled himself from the straightjacket of agenda-driven or tradition-mandated, outcome-based theology--paying no tribute to conformity with any human opinion--he is by no means a doctrinal libertine. He is manifestly committed to declaring "the whole purpose of God" (Acts 20:27), and yet equally determined "not to exceed what is written" (2 Corinthians 4:6). This honest, forthright handling of Scripture renders MacArthur's work refreshingly free of the distortions and outright oppositions of the ear-tickling theology demanded by fallen human preference--which is so often shamelessly catered to and pandered to by the Lord's foes and friends alike!

In these commentaries (and, indeed, in any of MacArthur's books and sermons), the subject matter of Holy Scripture is always presented with credence as trustworthy, dynamic, living truth that has urgent and immediate application for every reader--as you would expect of words written by Almighty God Himself.. And MacArthur is a master at explaining the Bible with the Bible by comparing parallel passages, citing cross references with similar details, doctrines, or concepts, and appealing to Scriptural examples as the best demonstration of Scriptural principles. As a result, his sermons and commentaries have broad appeal and relevance in any and every society or time period. In addition to the trustworthy doctrinal content, MacArthur's commentaries are rich with fascinating historical and cultural details that bridge the gap of millennia and bring the reader closer to the events, people, and settings of the Bible. Many informative linguistic insights are also provided which further enhance the understanding of words and passages. Extensive quotations from various authors on related subjects and issues add a stimulating variety of perspective, which is accessible in the commentary chapters where they appear and in the bibliographies at the end of each volume.

The format of the commentary series is designed for maximum convenience, with helpful features for quick reference and more in-depth study. In every volume and every chapter, the message of the Word of God is presented with clarity and concision that will readily appeal to the most serious Bible student, and yet the content is not overly technical so as to be too laborious for a layman.

Most importantly, the rich information and detail that is presented about God and His truth is always accompanied by a convicting call to practical application in sincere obedience, as the Lord Jesus said: "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them" (John 13:17). This governing principle for the commentary project is given by Dr. MacArthur in the series Preface, which appears at the outset of every volume: "My prayer is that each reader will fully understand what the Holy Spirit is saying through this part of His word, so that His revelation may lodge in the minds of believers and bring greater obedience and faithfulness--to the glory of our great God."

ALL of John MacArthur's books are similarly valuable for their forthright, straightforward, faithful proclamation of the truth of God and the one true gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone (apart from any false considerations of human merit)--which is mankind's only hope of escaping God's righteous judgment against the sin we are all guilty of committing against Him. Some of my personal favorites, in addition to these commentaries, are--the MacArthur Study Bible (the greatest single-volume book in the history of the written word), One Perfect Life, The Gospel According to Jesus, Ashamed of the Gospel, The Love of God, and the Battle for the Beginning (among many others).

I became a big fan of Caruso St. John after I read this book. I admire their defiant spirit against trend of temporal showmanship. Like a sculpture piece their works carving thru context with sensitive rigor, which enhanced the quality of its surrounding without conforming.

A reference of joint diagrams, but not a how-to

This book focuses on construction joints for house framing. I was hoping for more on furniture and shoji construction. I have read that in Japan house framing and more delicate woodworking are considered two separate trades, and this book definitely belongs to the first category.

I was disappointed by the discussion. it has a lot of joints and nice diagrams of each one. But there is almost no text. Some of the joints are very specific like eves joints, but others are more general and why one would use a certain joint over another is left unsaid. Ideally it would have a lot more detail on usage.

There is basically no instruction on how to actually make the joints. Some are obvious, but some of the more elaborate ones are definitely not. The reader is basically left to guess the best way to produce a certain shape.

Note that the cover of the copy I got is a more boring black-and-white than pictured here.

Roversi's Elusive "Studio"

I'd love to review this book, if it ever would get released. Roversi has been a favorite of mine for many, many years, and I've been anticipating the release of this book ever since I learned of it.
I actually had it on order for over a year, with my order first placed a couple of months shortly before the book was to be released in 4th quarter 2002. Then, with only a month or so to go until the scheduled release date, it was mysteriously pushed back--if I remember correctly--about 13 months to late 2003. When that date passed without a release, Amazon told me that they had received them, but the book had not been released, so couldn't ship them. The release date was then listed as being a couple of weeks later, December 23rd of 2003.
When that date passed without the release, Amazon told me that in fact, they did not have them, and they did not know when the book would be released. When I asked them--twice--to specifically explain why they had said the books had been received, and then later denied that they were in their warehouse, they would not. And neither would Amazon provide me a contact for the publisher so I could try and get some first-hand information from them, as dealing with Amazon was turning into a complete waste of my time.
Completely and utterly frustrated, and angry with Amazon's inability to tell a straight story or provide an avenue for me to get information from the publisher, I finally cancelled my order in March 2004, with the "projected" release date still listed at December 23rd of 2003.
Now, with the book never having been released, Amazon lists availablility as "Out of Print--Limited Availability". Good work, Amazon! Accoring to them, it's already in the cut-out stacks without even one book having gotten into consumer's hands. Looks like it will never get reviewed, huh?

I absolutely agree with the other review for this book: I also had ordered it, I was also expecting it to be published, I also cancelled the order since nothing was happening, I'm also disappointed with the fact that I don't know if it will ever be in my hands... what does "limited availability" mean? Is there only one copy belonging to own Paolo Roversi?
What has really happened?

Her gift to me.

I found Dr. Clark's work hoping to more intelligently support a relative with cancer. Isn't it a hoot that often we think we are giving just a little kindness out, but the universe pays us back in floods of love, joy, and peace? That was my case. Just knowing her and the people who worked with her made my world make sense. Do you know what I mean that a world of suffering, of disease, of loss and pain does not make sense? Fundamentally, in a universe of precision, and beauty and development over long periods of time, what goes on in this planet seems insane and shocking. In the middle of this mud puddle I came to love a woman who would wake at 4:00 to do hours of tedious detailed research then work for hours in a tiny little pink house in a dingy border town in Mexico with people who others had cast out to die because they were not repairable on ordinary terms, at least not cost effective. After that she would write for hours to document her findings and research new information. She had a few supporters so she could be an independent researcher. When she came under the wrath of the cancer industry she suffered but she was able to secure still a few more years of research to uncover the root mechanisms of disease. She could only have persisted in her efforts if she really believed beyond a shadow of doubt that disease was a mistake that could be corrected...that this was fundamentally wrong...that we were doing this to ourselves because of ignorance...that we could change our minds and decide against all of this suffering and insanity. That was the gift she gave to me, it was the transmission of a new seed of trust in life, of trust in the laws of life, and trust in my own abilities to learn to live in compliance with reality and to reject the mud and choose a cleaner pathway. She restored my hope that the universe is nurturing of its children and has heard the sorry cries of suffering and has acted and will act to help us move on to more rational futures and more intelligent ways of living.

This book is excellent!!!. I wish that I found it sooner. Too many of my friends are passing away from this devastating disease. I can now tell them to get this book and read it and follow all instructions. Thanks Dr. Clark.

Very good tips on just living in general, any ache's and pains, illnesses, flu, etc. I don't have cancer but this book was extremely enlighteneing and I tell anyone I know that does have it about this book.

If there is anyone who can write a book on Lata Mangeshkar, it is Raju Bharatan.He has been associated with hindi film music for over four decades now.This book gives us an insight on Lata's aura, charisma, her struggle and also little known facts, dispute with Rafi.Read for yourself how different music directors rate her. This is a no-holds-barred, no-punches-pulled account of the most unputdownable performer in the world. A 'must-buy' for all hindi film music lovers.

Authoritative Filmography, A Little Repetitive...

I have read the "authorized biography" by Harish Bhimani and had heard that Bharatan's version is a little scandalous. Bharatan's version comes across as being a little more blunt of course, but Lata doesn't really come out in a negative light in the book in my opinion. Bharatan is definitely an expert on Lata's career, and this book is more of a filmography than a biography in many aspects, as compared to the Bhimani book. Bharatan tends to repeat many incidents and facts over and over throughout the book, which sometimes makes the narrative seem a little slow. However, this is still a good read, and certainly a good collector's item for Lata's fans for her songs through 1994 or so.

About the Author

Keith E. Stanovich is currently Emeritus Professor of Human Development and Applied Psychology at the University of Toronto. He is the author of over 175 scientific articles and seven books.  Stanovich is the 2012 recipient of the E. L. Thorndike Career Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association and the recipient of the 2010 Grawemeyer Award in Education. In 2000 he received the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading. Stanovich is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 3, 7, 8, and 15) and the Association for Psychological Science.

Methodology Primer for Everyone

Stanovich was assigned reading in my psych class years ago (this review is of the 4th edition). It's the best introduction to sound methodology in the behavioral sciences I've ever read. As previous reviewers have pointed out, the critical thinking skills you learn from this book can (and OUGHT to) be applied) to many, many other facets of our daily life. It's not just for psych majors, but for everyone who reads a newspaper, buys consumer products, votes in elections, etc. And you don't need a background in statistics to benefit from it. A worthy companion to Darrell Huff's classic "How to Lie with Statistics" and John Allen Paulos's "A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper".

A must-read for anyone in psychology!

I read this book during my research methods class while completing my undergraduate education four years ago. This was one of the most helpful books that I have ever read related to psychology. More specifically, this book reminds us that, as psychologists, we need to remember to take in all information with a grain of salt. In other words, remember to critically evaluate all information presented to you and not believe everything is face valid.

Finally, a psychology through a skeptic's lens!

I have been waiting for years for a book like this to come along. It is truly a great read and gives tremendous skeptic treatment to the 'science' of psychology. For a long time I've considered myself a skeptic, but I have been on the fence as how to treat psychology--art or science? This book helped me to see it very clearly as science. Psychology has a long way to go to shed the soot of pseudoscience that has collected upon it in the last century, but if more people can cut through to the heart of the matter, like Stanovich has done, then the sooner it will emerge and bloom.
