About the Author
Jeremy McCarter wrote cultural criticism for New York magazine and Newsweek before spending five years on the artistic staff of the Public Theater, where he created, directed, and produced the Public Forum series. He served on the jury of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and is writing a book about young American radicals during World War One. He lives in Chicago.

Lin-Manuel Miranda (Book, Music, and Lyrics/Alexander Hamilton) is the Tony and Grammy award-winning composer-lyricist-star of Broadway's In the Heights--winner of four 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Orchestrations, and Best Choreography with Miranda receiving the award for Best Score. Additionally, he is the co-composer and co-lyricist of Broadway's Tony-nominated Bring It On: The Musical and provided Spanish translations for the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story. Miranda, along with Tom Kitt, won the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy for Best Original Music and Lyrics for their work on the 67th Annual Tony Awards. In 2015, Miranda was named as a Fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He lives with his family in New York City.

How lucky we are to be alive right now

Let's just accept it...when Lin-Manuel Miranda does something, he does it right, all the way, and maybe better than anyone else.

I'm fortunate enough to have seen "Hamilton" twice. I've read the Chernow biography, listened to the cast recording non-stop (ha) since September, and been an avid follower of Lin's tweets, Facebook posts, interviews, #Ham4Ham shows, and Genius annotations. I've been a musical theatre geek for five decades and have never felt this excitement about any show (with the possible exception of A Chorus Line). So when I heard months ago that Lin and former New York magazine drama critic Jeremy McCarter were putting together a book about the creation of "Hamilton," I pre-ordered my copy and started counting the days. Now it's here, and.... wow. Just wow.

Given the show's deserved status as a cultural phenomenon that will be playing to sold-out houses for years, it would have been easy to just throw together a "behind-the-scenes" book with a few interviews, toss in some publicity stills, and have a guaranteed best-seller. This "Hamiltome" couldn't be further from that. Among other delights, it includes: the full libretto of this sung-through (and rapped-through) show, with extensive annotations from LMM that give new insights, meaning, and historical context to the words that you might already know by heart; more than 30 essays about the cast members, the production team, the creative process, and the facts of Hamilton's life; copies of relevant historical documents referenced in the show; pages from LMM's notebooks with early drafts and outlines; and a stunningly beautiful array of production photographs, cast portraits, and backstage candids. And all of this is thoughtfully organized and packaged in a beautifully bound volume with ivory deckle-edged paper - a book like books used to be. (Trust me, this is one book you don't want to read on Kindle; it's actually a sensory experience to hold it and turn the pages.)

As McCarter notes in the Introduction, the title "Hamilton - The Revolution" has two meanings. There is the American Revolution that is brought to life in this show, and there is the revolution of the show itself - "a musical that changes the way that Broadway sounds, that alters who gets to tell the story of our founding, that lets us glimpse the new, more diverse America rushing our way." Do what you can to see "Hamilton," either on Broadway or when it comes to your town. It's unlike anything else. Until then, this book and the original cast recording will get you as close as possible to an orchestra seat at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

A stunning creation, but I knew that before I even saw it...

This book is a thing of beauty! I ordered it early and it - literally - just arrived at my front door. Giddy with excitement, I pulled back the packaging tab and inside was this glorious tome. The design is exquisite, the words flow as beautifully as the pictures from page to page: lyrics, insights and anecdotes galore - nothing has been overlooked. To be truthful, I came back to Amazon to order another as a gift, but there don't seem to be any available. So glad I ordered early! Looking forward to enveloping myself in this Hamilton word and pictures story, that is until I actually get to see the show... A girl can dream :-)

Edited to add: and the dream is almost a reality... Used this gorgeous book to deliver surprise tickets to my niece who turned 18 today. I'm in New York and tonight's the night! AND, Miranda wins the Pulitzer on the same day. It's been a bit of a day!!!

Don't buy the Kindle version. It is not in Kindle format; it's just photocopies of double columned pages that doesn't fit the screen and is very hard to read. You have to manually enlarge each page separately if you want to read it.

Decent book, light on substance

Mishkin delivers a serviceable, but not great book. In his rush to leave his post at the Fed, you would think he would create a more engaging book, or at least include more flesh on the financial crisis. His analysis is fairly shallow and his structure seems more geared towards a freshman/high school level class than a full fledge book for college students. Several errors in the book, including on page 428 where he definitely uses incorrect numbers from the FDIC.

That being said, as some of the material was new to me, this book provides a great, accessible overview of many concepts and structures in the financial world. The readings are a breeze, and most of the examples used are easy to grasp and understand. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting an introduction to financial markets, but as a Economics and Business double major, I find it difficult to rate higher than 3 stars.

Missing Private Equity

This is a book about "Financial Institutions" and it does not discuss Private Equity firms! (as separated from Venture Capital firms). And it only discusses Venture Capital firms for a few pages. And as far as I can see, not a word about investment strategies: Levaraged Bouyots, Growth vs. Venture Capital, Mezzanine Capital, Distressed Investment.
In a book about financial institutions and their role on the financial markets, you would expect that a full chapter should be given to Investment Banking, a full chapter to Private Equity, a full chapter to Venture Capital firms, a full chapter to Angel Investing. Not in this book. Other than that, the book is written well.
Now I have to buy a book about more financial institutions.

very interesting book about Milton Erickson

This is a very interesting book about the work of Milton Erickson. Great therapists like Jeffrey Zeig analyze deeply how Erickson worked in terms of attitudes and techniques.

I don't understand the other review. Clearly, this book deserves 5 stars.

Solid Content!

This book continues to give me a lot of perspective into Ericksonian methods. I appreciate the quality. I am like the last reviewer, I don't know how it could have possibly received a 1 star review by the other reviewer! I seldom comment; however, after reading the first reviewers review...I felt I had to out of fairness to the author.

Certainly this book is not for everybody. In fact most books cater to a certain target market. I can only say by by assuming that the first review was written by someone who doesn't fall into the target market.

If you are a student of Ericksonian Hypnosis...you'll want this one in your collection.

Sorry ... have a few of his books.. went audio on this one for convenience .. as I have with many other books... yet Trumps attention to detail was obviously not present with the selection of the
narrator... Seemed old... low energy and loses his audience with a very monotone reading style... Trump.. you messed this one up..!

About the Author

Scott Empson is the Associate Chair of the Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology degree program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he teaches Cisco routing, switching, and network design courses in a variety of different programs–certificate, diploma, and applied degree–at the postsecondary level. Scott is also the Program Coordinator of the Cisco Networking Academy Program at NAIT, a Regional Academy covering Central and Northern Alberta. He has earned three undergraduate degrees: a bachelor of arts, with a major in English; a bachelor of education, again with a major in English/language arts; and a bachelor of applied information systems technology, with a major in network management. He currently holds several industry certifications, including CCNP, CCAI, and Network+. Prior to instructing at NAIT, he was a junior/senior high school English/language arts/computer science teacher at different schools throughout Northern Alberta. Scott lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with his wife, Trina, and two children, Zachariah and Shaelyn, where he enjoys reading and studying the martial art of Taekwon-Do.

 

Hans Roth is an instructor in the Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology department at Red River College in Winnipeg, Canada. Hans has been with the college for 11 years and teaches in the both the Electronic Technology and IT areas. He has been with the Cisco Academy Program since 2000 teaching CCNP curricula. Previous to teaching, Hans spent 15 years in R&D/product development designing microcontroller-based control systems for consumer products as well as for the automotive and agricultural industries.

Welcome to ONT! In 2006, Cisco Press came to me and told me, albeit very quietly, that there was going to be a major revision of the CCNP certification exams. Then they asked whether I would be interested in working on a command guide in the same fashion as my previous books for Cisco Press: the Cisco Networking Academy Program CCNA Command Quick Reference and the CCNA Portable Command Guide. The original idea was to create a single-volume command summary for all four of the new CCNP exams. However, early on in my research I quickly discovered that there was far too much information in the four exams to create a single volume; that would have resulted in a book that was neither portable nor quick as a reference. So when I jokingly suggested that they let me author four books—one for each exam—who would have expected Cisco Press to agree? Well, you have to be careful for what you wish for, as Cisco Press readily agreed. Realizing that this was going to be too much for one part-time author to handle, I quickly got my colleague Hans Roth on board as a co-author.

This book is the fourth and final volume in a four-volume set that attempts to summarize the commands and concepts that you need to know in order to pass one of the CCNP certification exams—in this case, the Optimizing Converged Cisco Networks (ONT) exam. It follows the format of my previous books, which are in fact a cleaned-up version of my own personal engineering journals— a small notebook that can be carried around and that contains little nuggets of information— commands that you forget, the IP addressing scheme of some remote part of the network, and little reminders about how to do something you only have to do once or twice a year, but that is vital to the integrity and maintenance of your network.

With the creation of two brand-new CCNP exams, the amount of new information out there is growing on an almost daily basis. There is always a new white paper to read, a new Webinar to view, another slideshow from a Networkers session that was never attended. The engineering journal can be that central repository of information that won't weigh you down as you carry it from the office or cubicle to the server and infrastructure room in some branch office.

To make this guide a more realistic one for you to use, the folks at Cisco Press have decided to continue with an appendix of blank pages—pages that are for you to put your own personal touches—your own configs, commands that are not in this book but are needed in your world, and so on. That way this book will hopefully look less like the authors' journals, but more like your own.

Networking Devices Used in the Preparation of This Book

To verify the commands that are in this book, many different devices were used. The following is a list of the equipment used in the writing of this book:

These devices were not running the latest and greatest versions of IOS. Some of it is quite old.

Those of you familiar with Cisco devices will recognize that a majority of these commands work across the entire range of the Cisco product line. These commands are not limited to the platforms and IOS versions listed. In fact, these devices are in most cases adequate for someone to continue their studies beyond the CCNP level as well.

Who Should Read This Book

This book is for those people preparing for the CCNP ONT exam, whether through self study, on-the-job training and practice, study within the Cisco Academy Program, or study through the use of a Cisco Training Partner. It also includes some handy hints and tips along the way to hopefully make life a bit easier for you in this endeavor. The book is small enough that you will find it easy to carry around with you. Big heavy textbooks might look impressive on your bookshelf in your office, but can you really carry them all around with you when you are working in some server room or equipment closet somewhere?

Organization of This Book

This book follows the list of objectives for the CCNP ONT exam:

• Chapter 1, "Network Design Requirements," offers an overview of the two different design models from Cisco: the Service-Oriented Network Architecture and the Enterprise Composite Network Model.

• Chapter 2, "Cisco VoIP Implementations," describes how to set up Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (CME) using the CLI, how to use the CLI for CME auto-configuration, how to install IP Communicator, and how to change codecs using the CLI.

• Chapter 3, "Introduction to IP QoS," describes how to configure QoS through the CLI, using Modular QoS CLI (MQC) for implementing QoS, implementing QoS using AutoQoS, and implementing and monitoring QoS using Cisco Security Device Manager (SDM).

• Chapter 4, "Implementing DiffServ," describes how to use Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR) for classification, configuring Priority Queuing (PQ), configuring Custom Queuing (CQ), configuring Weighted Fair Queuing (WQ), configuring Class-based Weighted Fair Queuing (CBWFQ), configuring Low Latency Queuing (LLQ), configuring LLQ with Class-Based Weighted Random Early Detection (CBWRED), configuring traffic policing and shaping, and implementing QoS preclassify.

• Chapter 5, "AutoQoS," includes topics such as the phases of AutoQoS, locations where AutoQoS can be implemented, router considerations and prerequisites, and deploying AutoQoS on both routers and IOS-based Catalyst switches.

• Chapter 6, "Wireless Scalability," includes topics such as configuring wireless LAN QoS using the CLI, configuring encryption and authentication on lightweight access points, and working with Cisco wireless control systems.
