Fast Food and Fun! Myrtles hunt for a new pasttime is a Hoot!

Another great Myrtle Clover book! I've enjoyed all of them and even got my husband reading them. The characters are well developed but still hold some surprises in each new book. You also have the familiar relationship with Myrtle and her son Red, but she never ceases to surprise this octogenarian, as well as her steady sidekick, Miles. I loved that Miles cousin was more involved in this one and it lead to a truly surprise ending!
This one combines sleuthing with snooping, of the eavesdropping kind!

Keep them coming Elizabeth!

Loved This - Can't Wait for the Next Myrtle Clover Novel!!!

I read a lot of mysteries, and out of all of them, Myrtle Clover is currently my favorite! The things that I love best about this cozy mystery series are the witty banter between her and her son, Red, and her neighbor and side kick, Miles. I also like how the author literally has us walking alongside of Myrtle as she pieces the clues together and solves the mystery before the police! I can barely stand the wait in between novels!

This is another really good Myrtle Clover mystery. I really enjoy reading these cozy mysteries and am now looking forward to the next one. I started reading these on Kindle but I just enjoy having the real book in my hands. Congratulations to ms. Craig on another great mystery.

Furthermore, the struc tural analysis of important virulence factors and surface antigens may allow the prediction of antigenic domains suitable for the development of new vaccines. Marc Chagall (1887–1985), one of the foremost modernists of the 20th century, created his unique style by blending richly colored folk art with Cubism, Surrealism, and imagery drawn from the Russian Christian icon tradition. This book explores a significant but neglected period in the artist’s career, from the rise of fascism in the 1930s through the end of World War II, which he spent in Paris and then in exile in New York.

Chagall’s paintings from this time express the horror of the Holocaust as well as hope for the survival of his people and belief in the ultimate triumph of love. Works use many of Chagall’s familiar figures—the Artist, the Bride, the Clown, the Wandering Jew—set in unexpected, often wrenching scenes. These contrast with lavish flower paintings that reflect the artist’s adoration of his wife, Bella. Less well known are Chagall’s canvases showing the Crucifixion of Jesus, often depicted as a Jew, and his rarely seen, dreamlike poems, eleven of which are published here. Susan Tumarkin Goodman and Kenneth E. Silver analyze Chagall’s complex iconography and phantasmagorical style, tracing his Jewish, Christian, autobiographical, French, and Russian sources.

Chagall in Extremis: The Years of War and Holocaust

This volume is published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at The Jewish Museum in New York from September 2013 to February 2014. It is not an exhibition catalogue in the usual sense of a numbered series of reproductions of the exhibited items; it consists, rather, of two essays centered around and commenting on the fifty-odd paintings and drawings in the show and a small selection of Chagall's poems in English translation. (In fact, the only serious argument I have with this book is that the originals of the poems--in Russian, Yiddish, and French--are not also given. Poetry is, as is well known, the first thing to be lost in translation, and surely a great number of the people who would want to see this exhibition and have the publication would be able to read the originals.) The focus is on the years between 1930 and 1948--although these are bracketed by the inclusion of both earlier and later works of a similar kind--and it should put to rest the notion that only the early Chagall is worthy of serious attention. For these are serious works indeed, and in fact rather shocking in their insistence on the figure of Christ as their central image. Who would have thought that the godfather of fiddler-on-the-roof imagery, for which this transplanted Russian Jew became most widely known, would have created during these years at least twenty-five images of the Crucifixion? How this came about, why Chagall went in that direction and what the figure of the crucified Christ ultimately meant to the artist is the subject of the fascinating seventy-page essay by Susan Tumarkin Goodman, the Senior Curator at The Jewish Museum, an established Chagall scholar whose many publications on the artist include the excellent "Chagall and the Artists of the Russian Jewish Theater," the catalogue of an exhibition she curated at the museum in 2008 (see the reviews on this website). Dr. Goodman calls her essay about Chagall in the '30's and '40's "The Fractured Years," a title concisely evocative of the "Love, War, and Exile" theme of the exhibition: years in which Chagall was forced to flee the Paris he had come to love, first to temporary refuge in the south of France, and then to the United States, where the increasingly credibly documented reports of the Holocaust caused him excruciating existential anxiety in his exile, and where at the same time he had to suffer the death of his beloved soul-mate, Bella, his muse and wife of over thirty years.

The second essay in the book is by the noted art historian Kenneth E. Silver, who has written extensively on French art in the early twentieth century and on French-Russian Jewish artists such as Chaim Soutine. His essay is titled "Fluid Chaos Felt by the Soul," a formulation used by the French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain, a friend of Chagall's, to describe the artist's work. Prof. Silver notes that the artistic theme of the "Jewish Jesus" had been evolving since at least the late eighteenth century, and he situates Chagall's Christ iconography well within this tradition: the connection between the Christian savior and Jewish martyrdom is at the bottom of the "flood of turbulent imagery [that] was the aesthetic rule of Chagall's oeuvre" (114).

There are about fifty full-page reproductions of the works, as well as numerous companion illustrations and photographs. The color of the reproductions is excellent, which is crucial with Chagall: as Picasso said, "when Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only person left who understands what color really is." Everyone who has seen a general survey of Chagall's works is familiar with one or two of his Christ paintings. But it is quite a different thing to see so many of them gathered from over thirty-five institutional and private lenders world-wide and to realize how important the image of the crucified Christ was to him in the insane years of World War II and the Holocaust. Having seen these paintings and read these essays, it is not likely one will ever think of Chagall in the same way again.

Excellent book!

This book has great articles on Shagall's life and work as well as good number of good quality reproductions of his work – the colors differ from the originals but not as bad as in other books I have seen. Overall excellent book for someone who wants to look at Shagall's paintings and learn more about him and his art.

Since receiving his Ph.D. from The University of Notre Dame, Ralph Bravaco has been a member of the faculty of Stonehill College, where he has taught more than a dozen computer science courses ranging from introductory programming to compiler design. Shai Simonson earned his B.A. in mathematics at Columbia University and M.S. and Ph.D in computer science at Northwestern University.

Good read, but contains stupid mistakes

I'll start by saying that the book is a very good introduction into OOP. The writer has a very good writing style that slowly introduces readers into common computer jargon, rather than saturating them in it from the very beginning. Though this style may be criticized by some, I believe it is what makes this book a very strong read. Also, the author does a very good job of including an array of exercises at the end of each chapter, ranging from error correction problems, to actual projects. The only big problem that I had with the book was the random typos that can be found throughout. The author seemed to either be in a hurry, or just didn't care when typing out some of the program examples. Chapter 11, in particular, was riddled with inconsistent variable names, and syntax errors. What I mean to say is that the author would label a variable as one name, but half-way down the page he would reference the variable using a different name. This might be seen as miniscule, but it can become very confusing for a beginner.

An Excellent Introduction

I used this book in an Introduction to Computer Science course. I have already done a lot of programming, though not in Java, so the material conceptually was not new to me. I enjoyed the book and I found it to be engaging and humorous.
My wife also took the course, and she had never programmed before. She really enjoyed the book, and she has learned a ton from it. She found the explanations to be help and not boring. She is a bit concerned that our next computer science class will not be as enjoyable because there will be a different textbook.

As a researcher of statistical problems in business and a professor of Statistics at a business school, Norean Radke Sharpe (Ph.D. University of Virginia) understands the challenges and specific needs of the business student. She is currently teaching at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, where she is also Senior Associate Dean and Director of Undergraduate Programs. Prior to joining Georgetown, she taught business statistics and operations research courses to both undergraduate and MBA students for fourteen years at Babson College. Before moving into business education, she taught statistics for several years at Bowdoin College and conducted research at Yale University. Norean is coauthor of the recent text, A Casebook for Business Statistics: Laboratories for Decision Making, and she has authored more than 30 articles—primarily in the areas of statistics education and women in science. Norean currently serves as Associate Editor for the journal Cases in Business, Industry, and Government Statistics. Her research focuses on business forecasting and statistics education. She is also co-founder of DOME Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit foundation that works to increase Diversity and Outreach in Mathematics and Engineering for the greater Boston area. She has been active in increasing the participation of women and underrepresented students in science and mathematics for several years and has two children of her own.

Richard D. De Veaux (Ph.D. Stanford University) is an internationally known educator, consultant, and lecturer. Dick has taught statistics at a business school (Wharton), an engineering school (Princeton), and a liberal arts college (Williams). While at Princeton, he won a Lifetime Award for Dedication and Excellence in Teaching. Since 1994, he has taught at Williams College, although he returned to Princeton for the academic year 2006–2007 as the William R. Kenan Jr. Visiting Professor of Distinguished Teaching. He is currently the C. Carlisle and Margaret Tippit Professor of Statistics at Williams College. Dick holds degrees from Princeton University in Civil Engineering and Mathematics and from Stanford University in Dance Education and Statistics, where(he studied with Persi Diaconis. His research focuses on the analysis of large data sets(and data mining in science and industry. Dick has won both the Wilcoxon and Shewell awards from the American Society for Quality. He is an elected member of the International Statistics Institute (ISI) and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the ASA. Dick is well known in industry, having consulted for such Fortune 500 companies as American Express, Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, DuPont, Pillsbury, General Electric, and Chemical Bank. He was named the “Statistician of the Year” for 2008 by the Boston Chapter of the American Statistical Association for his contributions to teaching, research, and consulting. In his spare time he is an avid cyclist and swimmer. He also is the founder and bass for the doo-wop group, the Diminished Faculty, and is a frequent singer and soloist with various local choirs including the Choeur Vittoria of Paris, France. Dick is the father of four children.

Paul F. Velleman (Ph.D. Princeton University) has an international reputation for innovative statistics education. He designed the Data Desk® software package and is also the author and designer of the award-winning ActivStats® multimedia software, for which he received the EDUCOM Medal for innovative uses of computers in teaching statistics and the ICTCM Award for Innovation in Using Technology in College Mathematics. He is the founder and CEO of Data Description, Inc. (www.datadesk.com), which supports both of these programs. He also developed the Internet site, Data and Story Library (DASL; lib.stat.cmu.edu/DASL/), which provides data sets for teaching Statistics. Paul coauthored (with David Hoaglin) the book ABCs of Exploratory Data Analysis. Paul teaches Statistics at Cornell University in the Department of Statistical Sciences and in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, for which he has been awarded the MacIntyre prize for Exemplary Teaching. His research often focuses on statistical graphics and data analysis methods. Paul is

a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Paul’s experience as a professor, entrepreneur, and business leader brings a unique perspective to the book.

At least read the summary @ bottom- Okay- but not sure i'd reccomend.

The textbook shipped fast, and paper quality is decent (some reviews state that the paper is thin- I didn't see any issues with it). There is no CD, so check with your professor if the CD is required or not for your course.

The chapter's are the same, however, the chapter problems are DIFFERENT. Some are the same, but many are different than the actual textbook- so be careful if your grade is based off of homework assignments involving the chapter problems at the end of the chapter. I know this from comparing my text with others in my class.

Kind of blows finding out almost half way through class when your professor starts grading your assignments and your grade is suffering from the homework assignment.

I contacted Amazon, they were great but since this purchased from a seller I had to message them directly. I've sent a message to the seller- will update once I hear back.

Summary: Great to purchase for just the text.
Be Careful: If your looking for the CD or for the chapter problems you could be wasting your $$.

Useless Because the Included Datasets are For Another Book

The included CD is not for the third edition of the book! It has 3rd edition printed on the CD, but the material is all for the second edition (including second edition logos!). Thus, most of the chapter exercises are useless since they don't match the datasets on the CD. I have ordered two new copies of the third edition, and both have the same problem. Nor will Pearson correct the problem. I contacted their customer support line, and they insist that it is Amazon's problem.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned this. It makes me suspicious of the other reviews. There is no way that a reviewer could have actually used the book, since this problem would have been completely obvious if you were really using the textbook.

Great book, poor variable choices

Great descriptions and great deal for a great book. What can I say? A book is a book, especially when you need it for class. My only problem is this texts refers to its variables in the typical Statistical way, with little rhyme and reason. It is particularly confusing for me when my professor decides to "alter" those variables and subtle naming of variables. But hey, statistics is statistics

About the Author
Craig Mullaney grew up in a blue-collar, Irish-Catholic family in Rhode Island and graduated from West Point in 2000. An Airborne Ranger, Mullaney earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. In 2003, he led an infantry rifle platoon along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. His platoon operated along the entire spectrum of operations—from humanitarian assistance to combat engagements against Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters. Mullaney was later selected to join the Old Guard, the Army's elite honor guard for Arlington National Cemetery. He served three years on the history faculty of the U.S. Naval Academy, focusing on the history of American foreign policy. Mullaney’s military awards include the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star Medal, and Army Commendation Medal with “V” device for valor. He was an adviser on the Obama-Biden campaign and is now a member of the President-elect's Transition Team.

An Instant Classic

The Unforgiving Minute is a spectacularly written, extremely accurate depiction of the life of a US Army Officer involved in the Global War on Terror. As a member of the West Point class of 2000, I've shared many experiences with Craig. These include not only our time at West Point, but also time that I spent at the same locations in Afghanistan a year after Craig. His accuracy and presentation are astounding, and the challenges he faces are real.

Beginning with his time as a cadet, Craig takes us through his 4 years at West Point, his time in Ranger school, and his attendance at Oxford as a Rhode's Scholar. He takes us on a journey of developing relationships with his soldiers, and then testing and growing those relationships on the battlefields of Afghanistan. The struggles that he details are something that all Army leaders deal with, but few can put to paper as well as Craig has.

In addition to all that, this book is a love story and a story of family hardships. This book is truly a page turner that I recommend to anyone. "The Unforgiving Minute" is an instant classic that I will read over and over again.

This is the life story of West Point graduate... Rhodes Scholar... Afghanistan veteran... Craig Mullaney... who also believe it or not... wound up teaching at the Naval Academy. The author takes you from his childhood which included great admiration for his hard working Father, to an in depth look at life for a plebe at the hallowed grounds of West Point. It's invigorating for the reader as Craig describes the demanding goals that are set so high for our future leaders... both physically... and academically. The smallest detail is never small enough to be overlooked. A tiny... seemingly insignificant detail now... can save a life on the battlefield. One of the most enjoyable parts of this literary journey are the quotations that are peppered throughout the story. They range from Plato: "ONLY THE DEAD HAD SEEN THE END OF WAR." to "WHO SEEKS PEACE MUST PREPARE FOR WAR."

After West Point Craig wins a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, and in my opinion this is the one part of the book that loses a little traction. After completing his Oxford education the author enters Ranger School... and during this portion of his training it is literally impossible not to be in absolute awe of these future leaders of America. As an honorably discharged Viet Nam era veteran, I am amazed at the capability to push both the body... and the mind... past any logically accepted limits... and to have the inner strength and fortitude... to push both of them together in harmony. Another laudable character trait constantly displayed by the author throughout this story... is the fact that he... openly shares his fears... doubts... and uncertainties... with the reader. A sterling example of this is when he asks a war veteran: "HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW YOU'LL HANDLE COMBAT?" "YOU WON'T HE RESPONDED. YOU'LL NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU'RE THERE." "WHAT YOU KNOW FOR CERTAIN IS THAT IT WILL BE CHAOTIC AND LOUD, AND YOU'LL BE READY TO PISS IN YOUR BOOTS. YOU'LL BE MORE SCARED OF LETTING DOWN YOUR MEN THAN ANYTHING THE ENEMY'S GONNA DO TO YOU. AND THEN YOU'LL LEAD FROM INSTINCT AND JUDGMENT. THAT'S THE PRICE OF A SALUTE."

Craig adeptly summarizes his lessons learned from his military and Oxford education when he said: "Where the military academy had taught me how to answer questions, Oxford taught me what to ask." As Craig is deployed to Afghanistan the following words of wisdom echo in his head: "BE POLITE. BE PROFESSIONAL. BE PREPARED TO KILL EVERYONE YOU MEET."

In Afghanistan every bit of Craig's education and training comes in to play as he becomes a leader of men in combat. This tale of a young man with military aspirations takes you full circle from the classroom to specialized training to war and back to the classroom... as an Army man... training young Navy plebes. When the author's younger brother graduates West Point... Craig battles with his inner demons... as to what he should tell him. I say... simply give him this book to read.

Everyone Must Read This. Changed My Mind About the Military

I live in Berkeley, CA, and like most of the population here, am as far to the left politically as it is possible to get. I have always had a negative view of the military in general and in particular, of the kind of person who would volunteer for it. It has seemed to me to be the sort of thing men (and to a lesser extent women) do who want to have power over others, and who need to feel superior to others. Needless to say, news from Abu Ghraib did nothing to change my perception of this.

Mullaney's story, however, has changed my mind. His sense of integrity, honor, and humility, along with others he served with, comes across so clearly in his writing, that I have had to re-evaluate my beliefs about military culture. He is the kind of person I would actually trust to carry a gun, and to represent the U.S. in other countries. I can only assume that he would not love the army so much unless it was filled with other people holding values similar to his. He wrote in the Author''s Note that he hoped his book would help America better understand its military. He has done that for me, and I believe many like me will feel the same.

I recommend this book to every American--to those who love the military, and especially to those who think they hate it.

About the Author
John Whitman is the author of numerous books and projects, including the "Star Wars: Galaxy of Fear" series, "Zorro and the Witch's Curse", and, most recently, the trading cards for "24 Day 3." He is a 4th-degree black belt and defensive tactics instructor in Krav Maga, the official hand-to-hand combat system of the Israeli military, has trained in protective services and defensive tactics in both the United States and in Israel, and has served as an instructor of U.S. law enforcement agencies and military anti-terrorist units.

Mogg specializes in dance photography in the San Francisco Bay Area. Portraiture, headshots, videography, and wedding services are also provided by his company, Dancing Images.

Great Book!!!!!!!

Great book for teaching tactics of Krav Maga, this book is really not a learning book by just reading, it would help if you already have some Martial Arts experience and also if you have a partner to practice on. I wish the photo's were in color they would be easier to see.

Absolutely the final word on Krav Maga. And when I checked to find the forward was written by Bas Rutten I decided I had to have this book. Krav Maga is a fascinatingly simple form of Martial Art that works on the street where so many other styles really don't even have a place. it's the real deal taught to the IDF in a war zone. It' doesn't screw around with fancy moves that will never happen in a real situation or a Bruce Lee movie (as good as he was). Krav Maga is an art that looks at the maximum damage that can be done in the least amount of time to neutralize a threat or multiple threats and move on.

As a martial artist for the last ten years I found this book really nice to look through, I use it more as an idea book, If I'm looking for something to practice I can just pull open a page and do an application

That being said, the weapon defense in this book is poor and not to be trusted , I would never use any of their weapon defenses in a real situation.

Overall four stars because of great hand to hand techniques, which do sometimes have to be modified, and poor weapon defense. Great use of images, makes every movement very clear.
